APGA Participates in Public Awareness Initiative

On April 2 and 3, the American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practice (RP) 1162: Public Awareness Programs work group met to continue their discussions on a third edition of the document. John Erickson is officially on the work group, but Erin Kurilla participated on his behalf.

There are several themes being addressed in the latest version of API RP 1162: a narrowing and refining required safety messages; an openness to collaboration on the development of messages and their delivery methods; and, a consideration for consistency in program evaluation. In each of these areas, APGA staff have well represented membership’s positions and concerns related to the existing public awareness requirements. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is heavily involved in the development of this revision and those on the work group remain optimistic that after publication, the new version will be incorporated by reference in to federal regulations.

The work group hopes to distribute the draft third edition by early 2020 for balloting. APGA will be involved throughout the drafting process and has an official voting role for the RP. When the time comes, APGA staff will distribute the RP for membership review and will collect and consolidate comments for submission through the balloting process.
