Commissioner LaFleur to Leave FERC

On June 20, Commissioner Cheryl LaFleur announced through Twitter that she will be leaving the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) at the end of August and the July Open Meeting will be her last Commission Open Meeting. Commissioner LaFleur was first nominated by President Obama to FERC in 2010 and was confirmed for a second term by the Senate in 2014. She served as Acting Chairman of the Commission from November 2013 to July 2014 and January to August 2017 and as Chairman from July 2014 until April 2015.

APGA leadership meets with the FERC Commissioners twice a year as a means to communicate information and positions on federal regulatory matters of concern to public gas systems. These meetings play a critical role in APGA’s advocacy efforts as they have allowed APGA to develop and maintain a relationship with the Commissioners. APGA last met with the FERC Commissioners in May and during our meeting with Commissioner LaFleur, Sam Davis, who is APGA First Vice Chair and General Manger & Chief Executive Officer of Lake Apopka Natural Gas District, presented the Commissioner with an APGA Appreciation Award in recognition of her service on behalf of America’s natural gas consumers.
While a replacement for the Commission seat that Commissioner LaFleur will vacate has yet to be formally announced, reports have indicated that Allison Clements, an energy lawyer, may be named to the seat. Ms. Clements, currently the director of clean energy markets at the Energy Foundation, has a long history of working with clean energy groups and also worked at the Natural Resources Defense Council for nine years.
