APGA Requests Federal Agencies to Investigate Natural Gas Price Surges
Washington, D.C. (February 19, 2021) – The American Public Gas Association (APGA), representing more than 700 local, municipally-owned natural gas systems in 38 states, issued the following statement in response to the recent surge in natural gas prices due to severe weather:
“APGA members have proudly served their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and now during Winter Storm Uri to maintain safe, affordable, clean, and reliable natural gas for use in cooking and in space and water heating. The recent severe weather in this country has led to natural gas prices increasing over 300 percent, forcing utilities to spend millions of dollars more than their typical purchasing budget in just over one weekend. These resulting price spikes are expected to cause excessive energy bills, which will fall squarely on consumers, who are already burdened by the pandemic and accompanying recession.
“Today, APGA and the American Public Power Association sent a letter to the Department of Energy and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requesting an investigation into the historic increase in natural gas prices that occurred over the last week. APGA also urges President Biden to issue a Major Disaster Declaration, thus making federal funding available to assist public natural gas systems in the payments made for the high prices during this severe weather event.”
