APGA Disappointed in Administration’s Moratorium on New Oil and Gas Auctions on Federal Lands and Waters

Washington, D.C. (January 27, 2021) – The American Public Gas Association (APGA) is disappointed by the Biden Administration’s announcement to impose a moratorium on new federal oil and gas leasing.  The direct use of natural gas can and should play a key role in our energy future, and efforts that impact getting natural gas into the marketplace, whether through production or through transportation, will harm consumers and the economy as a whole.

As a cost-effective, reliable and efficient energy source, consumers value the ability to choose natural gas to meet their families’ energy needs. National studies have shown that homeowners overwhelmingly prefer natural gas energy for space and water heating, cooking and clothes drying. The direct use of natural gas can also play an important role in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  Natural gas utilities and their customers have led the charge in reducing GHG emissions through an expansion of the nation’s gas infrastructure, along with continuous efficiency increases and advancements in renewable energy sources, which have led to energy-related carbon dioxide emissions hitting 25-year lows. In fact, since 1970, gas utilities have added 30 million more residential customers with virtually no increases in emissions.

With its growing domestic supply and safe, reliable and efficient delivery system reaching many of the homes and businesses in America, the direct use of natural gas is an important part of our country’s energy future.
