2019 ICC Voter Sign Up Ongoing

Over the last several years, APGA staff has stressed the importance of becoming involved in the International Code Council (ICC) code development process. Public utilities have the distinct privilege of having individual votes as governmental members. In 2019, the ICC will be amending the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). As a reminder, the ICC is the main source of standards for the residential construction segment and they impact how, where and when natural gas can be used in a home or business. An overwhelming majority of state and local jurisdictions already use some version of the Code Council’s model codes. Now, more than ever, APGA members need to participate in the development of the model building codes that form the basis of construction regulations across the country. If your utility is a Government Member, you may designate four to 12 voting representatives. If you have paid your dues and are a part of ICC, you can sign up voters up until September 23.
There have already been multiple proposals challenging the direct use of natural gas, either eliminating or severely limiting its use. More guidance on these will be forthcoming, as the code process continues with the ICC Annual Conference occurring in October. In fact, a webinar to talk further on ICC voting is scheduled for November 5 at 2:00 p.m. ET. Click here for more information and how to register.

However, don’t miss out on this critical time to sign up voters to participate before September 23. The industry needs to work together to help develop the next generation of building codes that will form the basis for uniformity in building safety in all 50 states. Please make participation in the Code Council’s model code development process a top priority every year. APGA staff is grateful for your time in this work.
