On February 19 and 20 in Arlington, Va., the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) held their Research and Development Forum. Approximately every two years, PHMSA gathers the pipeline community to assist in setting the national research agenda to “foster solutions for the various challenges associated with pipeline safety and with protecting the environment.”

The forum aims to identify key pipeline technical challenges facing the industry and government, disseminate information on current research efforts and identify new research that can meet known challenges. The 2020 forum focused on five areas: gas gathering pipelines; preventing and mitigating geo-forces on pipelines and facilities; automation solutions for integrity management challenges; underground gas storage facilities; and, liquified natural gas. Erin Kurilla and Todd Brady attended on behalf of APGA and the APGA Research Foundation.
