Hurricane Florence – Weathering the Storm

Hurricane Florence made landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane on Friday morning, September 14, at Wrightsville Beach, N.C. As those in its path know, the rain, not the wind has proven to be the biggest challenge.

North and South Carolina broke all-time rainfall records. In Swansboro, North Carolina the rainfall total reached 34-inches and continues to grow. On Monday, the Cape Fear River reached a height of 61.8 feet near Fayetteville, North Carolina. Hurricane Florence has shown no mercy.

In preparation of the storm, APGA members throughout North and South Carolina activated their Emergency Response Centers, staged their personnel, and closely monitored their systems. As the storm continued to slowly move north, APGA members in Danville, N.C., and Richmond, Virginia prepared for Hurricane Florence impacts.

APGA is thankful to report: all member systems weathered the storm and maintained service to customers throughout the event. It is due to the commitment to safe systems and operations, early preparation, and a touch of luck that Hurricane Florence was no match for the public gas systems that you all operate.
