Proposed Ban on Standing Pilots for Decorative Gas Fired Room Heaters Disapproved

During the most recent revisions to CSA/ANSI Z21.50 and Z21.88 standards, there was a proposal to ban standing pilots for vented decorative gas appliances and vented gas fireplace heaters. Proponents of the ban argued that manufacturers are moving away from installing standing pilots for the products. However, no safety-based rationale was provided in the proposed bans, and since the Z21 standards are “standards for safety,” it was argued that the proposals were not justified. The removal of the standing pilot coverage precludes future use of the technology and incentivizes manufacture of products designed with standing pilots to go to market without the design certification for safety provided by the Z21 standards. The American National Standards (standards CSA/ANSI Z21.50 and Z21.88, respectively), has agreed with the industries comments and has kept the provisions covering standing pilot lights in the affected product standards.
