APGA Asks DOE to Study the Direct Use of Natural Gas

On September 4, APGA sent a letter to the Department of Energy (DOE) asking the agency to commission a study on the use of natural gas in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Over the last several years, we have seen some of the national labs promote the concept of “electrification” across transportation, building and industrial sectors as part of a larger environmental policy platform. A recent example is the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Electrification Futures Study (EFS) series. This series of studies is exploring scenarios with, and impacts of, widespread electrification of energy end-use in the United States.

In an effort to help facilitate a more balanced approach, we are requesting DOE to commission a study or a series of studies that looks at the role of natural gas in residential settings, commercial buildings and industrial applications. Having the results of this research publicly available would enable policymakers to understand the impacts, benefits and opportunities associated with the direct use of natural gas. A balanced study that looks at natural gas direct use would enable those policymakers and regulators to hear a different perspective and provide them with the tools to promote a balanced energy policy.
