APGA Holds Webinar on Zero Net Energy Homes

On June 22, APGA hosted a Zero Net Energy (ZNE) homes webinar. Neil Leslie provided an overview of a report released by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) on ZNE homes. The report, which was funded by APGA, summarizes the current state of the zero net energy home market, typical design approaches drawn from ZNE case studies, and the competitiveness of mixed-fuel ZNE technology options compared to all-electric designs. The report also addresses the challenged and opportunities for natural gas in ZNE homes.

The report outlines the numerous advantages natural gas appliances can offer ZNE homes. For example, natural gas lowers a home’s “energy footprint” which means a house would need smaller “solar panels footprint” to offset their source energy use. Natural gas also has high consumer acceptance for space heating, water heating, cooking, and clothes drying applications. Unfortunately, one of natural gas’ challenges as a fuel for ZNE homes is the fact that many ZNE builders are opting for an all-electric approach.
A recording of the webinar and a copy of the GTI report are available on the APGA website at www.apga.org/webinars.
